Dusty "Sits Up" For Caturday
It's a tradition in my family to teach our cats to "sit up". And NO, we don't call it "begging" - that would be undignified. Oscar, my 14-year-old boy kitty, has been doing it for years.
As you can see, Miss Dusty Winehouse (above and below) has mastered the art of "sitting up", especially if I'm offering a sip of a delicious cocktail...
Here's Dusty balancing on the side of the tub (that's Oscar to her right getting a drink). Look at Miss Thang showing her harmless fearsome fangs...
Happy Caturday!!

Happy Caturday from Oscar
Oscar in the bathtub - with Dusty in the bottom left corner
Although my beloved cat Oscar is about 14-15 years old, he's still a kitten at heart - and hasn't changed much over the years.
When Oscar was a baby, he was fascinated by running water. He played with it like it was a string, and would get soaking wet having fun in the sink. But over the years he seemed to move on - forgetting about his little obsession with running water.
However, when we moved to Astoria, the faucet in the bathtub leaked - producing a constant thin stream of water. Almost immediately, Oscar remembered how much fun running water could be...
Oscar also decided that - even though I give the cats fresh, cold water twice per day - DRINKING out of the shower is way tastier and way more fun...
But Oscar's entire soggy world came tumbling down around him about a week ago. The landlord sent a plumber to our apartment to fix a couple of things - including the leaky shower. This did NOT make Oscar a happy boy. In fact, he wouldn't even look at me, he was so mad ...
So now, even though there is fresh water in his dish, Oscar will sit in the doorway of the bathroom and cry until I turn on the water in the shower for him - then he drinks and plays and has a fabulous time.
At this point I just leave the damn thing running 24/7 so I don't have to hear his pitiful meows of pain and sorrow. Seriously, it's a Meryl Streep-worthy performance that I've seen (and heard) WAY too many times already.
Happy Caturday!

Oscar - International Superstar !
I have blogged many times about Rona Green - the fabulous Australian artist who creates fantastic characters, many inspired by the animal kingdom. This time Rona has really outdone herself - she created a character based on MY cat, Oscar!
I got the surprise of my life this week when I received a package from Australia - and it contained two fantastic tote/shopping bags. When I looked at the face on the bags, I recognized Oscar immediately and practically cried.
The note inside read:
Dear David,
A gift for you, inspired by a special someone you know - I hope you recognize him! I've re-named this alter ego I created "Osgar" - he wears a South American tattoo design on his chin.
All the best and take care.
Rona
PS: These bags do not contain lead!
HOW FRICKIN AWESOME IS THAT?!?!?!? Furthermore, the bags are a numbered, limited edition - and I got bags #1 and #2 !! Rona really brightened my entire week with this extreme act of fabulousness and kindness.
When I got back to the apartment I decided to try and get a picture of Oscar IN the tote bag - but there were no guarantees he would actually cooperate. I put the bag on the floor of my bedroom and Oscar immediately hopped in and started purring! It was like he knew it was "his" bag. And YES - I realize I sound like a Crazy Cat Queen right now, but you'll just have to deal with it.
Furthermore - Rona said via email that her "Osgar" bags were a big hit in Oz and have sold out! But stay tuned to see how YOU might be able to get your hands on bag #2 ...

Happy Caturday!
Another picture of my boy Oscar, chillaxin' on my loft bed. You know ... for a relatively old kitty (12+ years), he is still just as adorable as he was as a kitten.

The Guy I've Been Sleeping With...
Oh get your minds out of the gutter - it's Oscar!! I don't know what happened, but lately Mr. Thang climbs up the ladder about every other night and sleeps in my loft bed with me. Which is great ... until his morning Happy Dance (on my head) because he knows breakfast is imminent.
As you can see, Oscar isn't going to die of starvation anytime soon ... much like his Daddy. But he INSISTS on reminding me every morning about his breakfast.
Happy Caturday!

My Little Girl Is Turning Into A Woman!
My darling baby girl - Miss Dusty Winehouse - is IN HEAT!!! The poor thing walks around the apartment moaning ... so I need to make a Vet appointment for her ASAP to get her fixed. Hopefully this will curb Dusty's current desire to hit the Ho Stroll...

Chillin' On Caturday
Oscar (black & white and chubby all over) LOVES the blue blanket in these pictures - and of course Miss Dusty Winehouse (all black) has to do everything Oscar does. And here I was worried they wouldn't get along...

Annise Parker Elected Houston's Next Mayor

From the Houston Chronicle:
Congratulations to Ms. Parker! But I would like to remind her that it was probably the ever-important endorsement of the DavidDust Editorial Board that put her over the top. If you remember, DavidDust officially endorsed Annise Parker yesterday.
And in case you're wondering who else (besides me) is on the Editorial Board - it is a three-member panel consisted of myself and these two...

Although Dusty (left) and Ocsar (right) usually sleep through the meetings.
Annise Danette Parker was elected mayor of Houston on Saturday, winning her seventh consecutive city election and becoming both the first contender in a generation to defeat the hand-picked candidate of Houston's business establishment and the first openly gay person to lead a major U.S. city.

Monday Cat Blogging
OMG - little Miss Dusty Winehouse (above) is a handful! Her latest project consists of shredding the shower curtain liner in the bathroom. When she gets done with one, it looks like the Tasmanian Devil just took a shower. But, of course, when I catch her in the act, she bats those eyes and gives me a "Who, me?" look.

Luckily I can buy the liners at the Dollar Store - so it's not that major of a deal. But today I tried a new approach. I left about 2 inches of water in the tub - so she won't get in. My thinking is if she can't get in the tub (which she LOVES), she won't shred up the shower curtain. We'll see how it works.
Meanwhile, Oscar (below) does NOT approve of Dusty's shenanigans...

Bestest Friends

Oscar and Dusty are getting along wonderfully - in fact, they are becoming good friends. Oscar is such a sweet cat - if Dusty comes near him, he always "bathes" her face/head (like in the picture above). This is something he always did for Emmy, although Emmy never reciprocated.
Above is Oscar and Dusty sharing Oscar's favorite chair (he has reclaimed it - but she likes to get up there also). As you can see, Oscar is bathing her a little bit - and you can tell by Dusty's face that she is loving it.

Kitty Update

Here is a picture I took yesterday of Dusty and Oscar. Dusty is fascinated with candy wrappers - which she has no trouble finding in my dirty apartment. And as you can see, Oscar is looking at her disapprovingly. This cracks me up, because Oscar was such a BAD kitten. So, so, bad. And now he acts like the wise, sensible old man.
BTW - I totally caught Oscar PLAYING with Dusty yesterday. They were chasing each other through the apartment - and when Oscar saw me looking at him, he stopped and pretended it never happened. It seems that Oscar likes his little sister more than he wants me to know.

My Very Own LOLCats

OMG - I forgot how much fun it was to have a kitten around the house. I kept Oscar and Dusty separated in different rooms yesterday while my roommate and I were at work, but last night they interacted face-to-to-face. Oscar hissed a little bit, but I could tell his heart wasn't in it - he's just not a mean-spirited cat. In fact, he looked like he wanted to relent and play with the energetic Miss Dusty, but his pride wouldn't allow it. Yet. That is Oscar (above) looking dignified and above all this "childishness".
Dusty, on the other hand, has no inhibitions at all. And she is completely fascinated by her big brother Oscar. I give it a couple more days, and they'll be chasing each other around the apartment like maniacs.
Either that, or Oscar will finally snap and beat the crap out of Dusty for stealing his favorite chair - the one with the fluffy red and white cushions (below).

I Can Has Cheezburger: The MusicLOL

Last night I went to see I Can Has Cheezburger: The MusicLOL. It was being shown as part of the NYC Fringe Festival - a two-week celebration of the performing arts. The ticket was only $15, and I was curious to see how they would translate a website into musical theater.
I am by no means a theater critic, and I have very little experience with off-off-Broadway productions. But the show was cute and entertaining. It was very low-budget (that is pretty much the definition of off-off-Broadway), and some parts dragged a little - but I'm very happy I went.
Basically, the show followed the adorable LOLCat...

...in his quest for the elusive Cheezburger. During his journey, he meets FAIL, WIN, Wrong (as in "Ur doin it Wrong!") and others - most notably, the LOLRus (who had lost his bucket)...

Unfortunately, the show talked about "CHEEZBURGERS" for a full 78 minutes - so when I got out of that theater I was STARVING for a friggin cheeseburger. I proceeded immediately to the grocery store and got ingredients for Weight Watchers approved cheeseburgers...

And since the poor LOLCat spent the entire show trying (in vain) to get his Cheezburger, I let my darling LOLCat (Oscar) have a little of mine...

It was a lovely (and delicious) evening...
