Arby's Space Is Now A Tacky Pink Store

The landmarked Gage & Tollner restaurant space - which was, briefly, a delicious Arby's - is now a hot-pink jewelry store called "Ladies and Gents" (above). Which, based on the picture, looks a lot like Claire's - only pinker and not nearly as classy.

Sigh...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!! ...

BREAKING ROAST BEEF TRAGEDY: The fancy Arby's in Brooklyn has closed after only 7 months!!!!  OMG - I was planning on treating myself there for my birthday in a couple of weeks.  This is a devastating loss.

I must go home and change into my mourning clothes...

Dinner last night at Arby's in Brooklyn with Wonder Man couldn't have been more delicious - both the cuisine AND the company.

My Trip To The Promised Land (A.K.A. "Arby's")

Yes, on Thursday after work I jumped on the subway and took the short trip to the new Arby's on Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn.

As I've mentioned before, Arby's opened in the landmarked space that once housed the white linen Gage and Tollner restaurant.  I must say, it's obvious the owner of this Arby's franchise spent a lot of money making sure the interior stayed true to its roots.  Here is how the space (with the famous gas lights) looked back when it was a restaurant serving Jimmy Durante and Marilyn Monroe ...

Not a bad preservation job.  The space is long - and the counter is all the way in the back, with the kitchen behind a wall.  In fact - you cannot see any food being made at all - including the delicious curly fries.  A "Runner" brings your completed order out of the kitchen and hands it to you.

The staff was really nice and enthusiastic.  There were also a bunch of Arby's "corporate" types (below) milling about, supervising Opening Day.  I wanted to walk up to them and thank them for doing such important work (yes, Biatches, I said IMPORTANT) but I didn't bother them.  I didn't want to interrupt while they made the magic happen ...

While enjoying my meal (Roast Beef, Curly Fries, Southwest Mini-Egg Rolls ... and DIET Dr. Pepper - insert chuckle HERE), I noticed they had a traditional Bell for customers to ring if they received good service.  Every time the bell rang, the staff would chant "Thank you Guest, you're the BEST!".  It was really cute.

So, on my way out the original wooden revolving door (above), you KNOW I rang that bell, and I rang it loudly and proudly.

And the staff thanked me and told me that I was "the BEST"!  Wasn't that sweet?!?  I can't wait to go back...

Tonight's Dinner...

Oh YEAH!

More details tomorrow.  But needless to say, this was a joyous evening in which Angels sang heavenly songs, Fairies danced in beautiful rhythmic motion ...

It was awesome.

Dreaming of Tomorrow ...

Photography Credit: Lost City

Lost City got a sneak peak at the Arby's in Downtown Brooklyn (it's gorgeous, BTW) - which opens tomorrow.  And NO, Arby's never called ME for my grand tour/free meal - so I'll have my delicious dinner "incognito" after work.

But that's seriously OK, I don't mind paying for quality roast beef. And this way I won't have to worry about the paparazzi photographing me stuffing curly fries into my Arby-Q Sauce-stained face.  After all, the Paps have already found out where I live.

UPDATE:  A PR rep for Arby's just sent me a really sweet email - offering me an official tour and thanking me for my support. Remember this day, Biatches - January 20th, 2010 is THE DAY I OFFICIALLY "ARRIVED". I'm still going to sneak in anonymously tomorrow after work to strap on the feedbag - but I'm attempting to arrange an "official" visit for early next week.  Stay tuned...

Dear Arby's Publicist - What About ME?!?

Look what I saw on the Lost City Blog - a Publicist for the soon-to-open Arby's in Downtown Brooklyn contacted them...
Today, a press agent for the fast food franchise—which has taken possession of the beautiful, 19th-century, landmarked interior of the old Gage and Tollner space on Fulton Mall in downtown Brooklyn—reached out to Lost City.

Aside from offering an interview with an Arby's rep (
yes!), the publicist wanted to communicate two things. Arby's will bring 110 new jobs to the borough, and—very exciting—the joint will offer free Wi-Fi.

What irks me about this is the fact that Lost City, which is otherwise a great blog, has NOT been supportive of my favorite Roast Beef Fine Dining Establishment moving into the historic Brooklyn space.  Meanwhile, who has been a bigger champion of Arby's than I have???

Dear Arby's Publicist: I am available for a VIP tour on Thursday in exchange for all THE  FREE  PUBLICITY I've been giving you.  And then I'd be happy to sit down and enjoy my complimentary meal of delicious roast beef and curly fries.  You can reach me at daviddust@gmail.com so we can work out the details.

With Love and Horsey Sauce,

David Dust

BREAKING: Brooklyn Arby's to Open NEXT WEEK!

Thanks to those of you who sent me this story yesterday.  The Arby's in downtown Brooklyn (the one I've been breathlessly awaiting) is scheduled to open next Thursday!

I took this great news to the DavidDust "Art Department", and my crack staff (crackHEAD staff??) created this gorgeous artist's rendering of me entering the new Arby's ...

Didn't they do a great job?!? Look how thin they made me look!!  Anywhore, I WILL be taking a trip to Brooklyn in eight days for some delicious roast beef and curly fries.  Then I'll return to my apartment to watch the second episode of Project Runway Season 7.  And all will be right with the world...

>P,B!

Still No Fancy Arby's In Downtown Brooklyn

According to Lost City, the Arby's on Fulton Street in Brooklyn still hasn't opened - even though they had announced a December 16th opening date.  I am CERTAIN this is part of the larger, insidious plot to prevent me from obtaining delicious Roast Beef.  Curly Fry H8ters are EVERYWHERE...

BREAKING: Brooklyn Arby's Just Weeks Away!

According to the Lost City blog, the Arby's in Downtown Brooklyn is only weeks away from opening in the historic Gage and Tollner restaurant space. Cue my fat ass doing the HAPPY DANCE...

I feel kind of bad, because Lost City is an awesome blog about how we are losing the fabric of New York City to greedy corporate interests (like Arby's). Normally I'd agree - but I'd vote to put an Arby's in the crown of the Statue of Liberty if I could. Sorry Lost City, but on this one issue I'll have to disagree with you.

As a matter of fact, when I read this joyous Arby's news, the angels sang, the fairies danced ...

Curly Fry HATERS!!!

In an obvious attempt to deny my happiness, the NYC Landmarks Commission rejected Arby's plan to open a Brooklyn branch in the historic Gage and Tollner restaurant space (above). This is some kind of Terrorist/Republican/Homophobic/Commie BULLSHIT plot against me - I am sure of it.

From now on you will be able to find me doing a one-queen protest in front of the Landmarks Commission. I'll be the one chanting "HEY HEY - HO HO ... CURLY-FRY HATERS GOT TO GO!!"

NO JUSTICE ... NO PEACE!!

Arby's Coming To Brooklyn

Arby's has announced its plans to move into the landmarked Gage and Tollner restaurant space in Downtown Brooklyn. This is excellent news - since I can get there in about 15 minutes on the subway from my job. I can almost TASTE the curly fries now...

The space is legendary. Gage and Tollner opened in the location in 1892 - and celebrities like Mae West and Jimmy Durante dined in the gas-lit dining room during its heyday. For years, Gage & Tollner was said to be the oldest restaurant in New York City, until it closed in 2004.

The interior of the restaurant space is landmarked, so Arby's will have to have all construction plans approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. I have no idea how they will turn this...

Into this?...

But I did some research, and Arby's has done it before. This is from an amusement park/"frontier village" in Utah...

Pretty! Raymond Chera - the franchiser who will open the Gage and Tollner location - plans on opening 41 more restaurants within the 5 boroughs of NYC over the next ten years. So for his efforts in the name of Roast Beef, I am awarding Mr. Raymond Chera a "Golden Bunny" award.

Dearest Mr. Chera - let's get moving on the construction! I'm HONGRAY!!
