Guarding The Cash

Saw these pictures over at Jeremiah's Vanishing New York of the NYPD guarding the big Citibank across the street from Union Square. As you may have heard, the Occupiers were on the move yesterday across downtown Manhattan, and this area was one of their stops. I guess Mayor Billionaire Bloomberg didn't want the 99 Percent messing with his money. Priorities, people!!

I was able to steer clear of yesterday's mayhem - although I could see and hear police helicopters all day while at work.

Uganda's "Kill The Gays" Bill Could Soon Become Law

According to the Associated Press, the Ugandan Parliament is currently debating their "Kill The Gays" bill - which could soon become law.

From Joe.My.God:
If enacted, the Bill would greatly broaden the criminalisation of homosexuality by introducing the death penalty for people who have previous convictions, are HIV-positive, or engage in same sex acts with people under 18 years of age. The bill also includes provisions for Ugandans who engage in same-sex sexual relations outside of Uganda, asserting that they may be extradited for punishment back to Uganda, and includes penalties for individuals, companies, media organisations, or non-governmental organisations that support LGBT rights.

All Out has launched a petition aimed at Uganda's President. Please sign it HERE.

There is also a protest planned for tonight at the Ugandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. (via Towleroad):
Activist group GetEQUAL is holding a protest today at 4-6 p.m. at the Ugandan Embassy, 5911 15th Street NW in Washington, D.C.
If you can’t make it to the protest in person, you can call, write, and/or fax the Ugandan Ambassador to the United States. Please be polite, but firm. The contact information is:

Best.Sign.Ever

On Saturday over 6,000 people rallied in lower Manhattan (and all over the nation) to fight the GOP's assault on Planned Parenthood and women's health. And, via Gothamist, I present to you the PERFECT sign:

Brilliant. Not to mention the fact that the guy is a cutie.

You gotta love a man who knows when to keep his (pretty) mouth shut and let the experts do the talking. He's a keeper.

A Wisconsin DustBunny Speaks

I got this message via FaceBook from from DustBunny Stacey N who lives in Wisconsin. It's a few days old (I don't check FB very often) - but her words still ring true. Here is what she wrote in its entirety (emphasis mine):

David,
Thank you for posting on your site about the situation in WI. Sometimes, watching the national news, I get so frustrated and I don't think anyone outside the borders cares about our inept governor here and how he's flushing the state and almost 50 years of good labor relations down the toilet all so that he can get a cushy corporate executive posting after he's through.
One favor I would like to ask of you is this: please tell your readers that of all the union workers I've talked to, we ARE willing to make concessions because of the budget. One union basically said to the Governor that they would take all the benefit cuts and increase in pension payments if he would not change bargaining rights. He has not responded. He absolutely refuses to negotiate anything.
This is NOT about benefit cuts and contributing more to our pensions. This IS about maintaining the right of unions to come to the table with management to negotiate things like class sizes in schools, how many hours a nurse can work in one shift, and what sort of conditions steelworkers have to work in.
I don't see any of the above in the media, and I didn't see it in the Sunday political programs. All some want to do is make this about teachers (more than teachers are at the rally protesting, that's for sure), and insinuating that we're all just lazy, greedy bastards that won't take a cut in benefits and pay more in the kitty for health care and pensions.
Let me say this. For a governor who complains that health care costs are too damn high, he is doing NOTHING to decrease them. In fact, after his election he had WI join the group of states fighting the Health Care Reform Act in the courts. He'd rather have us at status quo ante, when you could kick people off for anything considered 'pre-existing'.
I also have another favor to ask. Looking at your site and others, I stopped buying things at Target after what happened in Minnesota, and other places that contribute to anti-gay activists. Because it was a gubernatorial race, a lot of local businesses are on the line for being boycotted, but there are some national ones that contributed to Gov. Walker's campaign. If you could spread the word not to buy products from the following businesses because of the idiot they and their employees helped put in power in WI, I'd appreciate it. Here's the list:
Walmart, Sargento Cheese, GE, 3M, and Kohler
I was at the rally yesterday, and the so-called Tea Partiers just turned out to be a bunch of pissed off white people whose message was no more than 'you have to suffer like the rest of us'. Funnily enough, by the way they were dressed, it didn't look like they were suffering too badly. There were a few misspelled signs, and a few people whose only reason for being there was to pick a fight like a group of drunken frat boys on a Saturday night. It failed. There were no arrests, and everything was pretty peaceful. That's how we do it here in WI.
Thanks for supporting us, David. We need all the help we can get. I haven't read the blog in a long time because life got really busy in the last few months, but pet Oscar and Dusty for me.
Thanks,
Dustbunny #1,
Stacey

Keep fighting the good fight, Stacey!

Wisconsin Shows Us How It's Done

Have ya'll been following the events in Wisconsin? If you haven't - here's a crash course:
  • Conservatard Scott Walker is elected Governor of Wisconsin in November with widespread support from those freaks with teabags dangling from their hats.
  • Shortly after taking office, Walker signs two business/corporate tax breaks. This turned an estimated $120 million state budget surplus into a deficit.
  • In order to pay for this gift to corporations, Gov. Walker (below) decided to go after the middle class - specifically teachers, firefighter, nurses and other state workers. He proposed a bill that would require higher pension and health insurance contributions and removal of collective bargaining rights for the unions representing these middle-class workers.

In other words - give to the rich, take away from the middle class. Typical Republican strategy.

I guess Governor Walker thought this would be easy. After all, it seems that only the Teatards are willing to actually get loud and get involved in politics these days. He figured these hard-working middle-class Wisconsinites would just roll over and take it.

But that certainly hasn't happened. Middle class workers started protesting - taking to THEIR state capital to let Republicans know that it's not acceptable to blame the middle class for a budget shortfall created by a Republican gift to corporations. And, for the first time in a long time, DEMOCRATS used their outside voices to shout down these idiots.

And as the protests have continued, the protestors have gained support from far and wide - including the Archbishop of Milwaukee, President Obama, and the friggin' Green Bay Packers (who, if you didn't know, are fairly popular in Wisconsin).

Then, in a brilliant maneuver, the 14 Democratic State Senators got the hell outta Dodge - literally. It seems that Wisconsin requires at least one member of the opposition party be present in order to debate/pass bills - but if all members are gone, the bill cannot pass. Furthermore, the rules say that the Seargent-at-Arms can compel the lawmakers to appear, using state law enforcement if necessary. However, state police can't cross state lines - and the "Wisconsin 14" are kicking it outside Wisconsin right now. BURN!

Dear Wisconsin: you are showing the rest of the nation how it's done. NO LONGER should we allow Republicans to pay for gifts to their corporate overlords by taking away from the middle class. Keep up the good work.

Let's hope the rest of the country watches and learns.

TRUE Christians

During the anti-government uprisings in Egypt, Egyptian Christians have been protecting their Muslim brothers during prayers. The picture above is pretty much what awesome is made of.

Someone needs to circulate this photo amongst right-wing "Christians" here in the United Stated with the words "ACT LIKE THIS" scribbled across it.

What would Jeebus do? He would be doing THIS:

Advice for Mubarak

8-year-old Saudi girl Juju (below) is full of the WIN. First, she's cute as a button. Second, she is smarter and more articulate than some people three times her age. Third, her name is "Juju" (duh). And, last, she gives out free advice to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak - love the "BTW" at the end:

I Believe That Children Are Our Future

The students of Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in Long Beach, CA were not about to let the Haters of the Westboro Baptist Church spread their stank on Wilson's home turf - so the kids did something about it...

I cried like a baby when I watched this.  If these kids represent our future, then we're going to be just fine.
