Nas and Kelis’s 2005 nuptials made them a hip hop power couple. Four years later, their ugly split made gossip headlines, marked by reports that she was asking for a hefty $45,000 a month in spousal and child support. He was allegedly unable to pay up because he owed $6 million in back taxes.
For the most part, Nas kept quiet during the divorce frenzy, letting the media speculate about his relationship status and finances. However, he did some clearing of the air after Sway Calloway revived the subject on MTV’s RapFix Live.
"I've always been away from too much limelight and that right there put me in — no one's exempt from people probing into your life once you get into the game," he conceded. "So the divorce put a lot of my business out there, man. People weren't thinking I was making that kind of money, and now they know."
The rapper promised to elaborate more on his reported million-dollar tax problems on his upcoming tenth studio album Life Is Good.
